If used correctly, there are no negative effects of using a fluoride varnish.

How does it work?

The varnish provides a source of fluoride which strengthens the surface of the tooth against decay.

How is the varnish applied?

It is applied to the tooth surface in the surgery by a dentist or hygienist using either a small piece of cotton wool or a brush.

What are the benefits of using a fluoride varnish?

If applied twice a year fluoride varnish can reduce decay in baby teeth by 33% and by 46% in the permanent teeth. It is usual to apply fluoride varnish to the teeth of children who already have decayed teeth or are considered to be at increased risk of developing tooth decay.

What is a fluoride varnish?

Varnish is applied to the tooth surface where it sticks and releases fluoride onto the tooth surface. A varnish can contain 25,000 parts per million fluoride.
